Chilgoza pine nuts in Kinnaur are primarily sourced from forest harvests, cultivated by native Kinnauras, pine trees typically require several years to mature.
During the harvest local women gather on a sunny day to extract the nuts from the cones. Using a small axe one lady among the group would carefully crack open the cones into halves and then quarter them with more striking, the other women in the group would skillfully extract the pine nuts from the broken pieces. It's a time investing process which take many days. Also to add sticky resin from the pine cones sticks to the hand which is only removed by kerosine or petrol.
Beyond its economic significance, the Chilgoza pine nut also embodies the cultural and community values of Kinnaur, particularly during festive occasions like weddings, where garlands made of these nuts, known as Ree, are presented to hosts as a symbol of appreciation and respect.
